Driftless Doozies

Nestled into the westernmost outskirts of the Driftless region lies a state park that has become increasingly popular in recent years, even though it is not traditionally associated with the Driftless region itself. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park is located about 15 minutes east of Faribault, MN and is now a southern Minnesota hotspot for camping, hiking, snowshoeing and nordic skiing. The park’s most notable feature is Hidden falls, a majestic 10-foot waterfall that is more calm and peaceful than it is absolutely awe-inspiring. Be sure to go early or late in the day to avoid the crowds. This park reached capacity on multiple occasions over the summer.

It’s a short walk to the waterfall, but the intrigue of the park goes far beyond just that. The hiking trails wind through what could serve as a reminder of once was. The maple-basswood forests that are present here are remnants of what is called the “Big Woods.” The “Big Woods” is a region of forests that was at one virtually surrounded by an oak savanna landscape.Today, much of the big woods has disappeared due to human intervention. The old growth forest within the park is one of the few remnants of this region that remain.
Taking a walk through the time capsule that is Nerstrand Big Woods State is such a cool experience that should be on every Driftless bucket list. Be sure to stay on the trail when you hike. The park is also home to the Dwarf Trout Lily, a rare flower that only grows within certain small parts of Minnesota. Make sure to visit in the spring to see the flowers in full bloom.
